A phonolite dyke at Mount Goonneringerringgi, south-eastern Queensland, carries prominent pink specks of eudialyte, together with manganoan pectolite (ranging to calcian serandite), aegirine, albite, arfvedsonite, nepheline, natrolite, and analcime. This is the first confirmed occurrence of eudialyte in Australia

OBJECTIVE
To assess the impact of a novel, silver-coated needleless connectors (NCs) on central-line–associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rates compared with a mechanically identical NCs without a silver coating.
DESIGNProspective longitudinal observation study
SETTINGTwo 500-bed university hospitals
PATIENTSAll hospitalized adults from November 2009 to June 2011 with non-hemodialysis central lines
INTERVENTIONSHospital A started with silver-coated NCs and switched to standard NCs in September 2010; hospital B started with standard NCs and switched to silver-coated NCs. The primary outcome was the difference revealed by Poisson multivariate regression in CLABSI rate using standard Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveillance definitions. The secondary outcome was a comparison of organism-specific CLABSI rates by NC type.
RESULTSAmong 15,845 hospital admissions, 140,186 central-line days and 221 CLABSIs were recorded during the study period. In a multivariate model, the CLABSI rate per 1,000 central-line days was lower with silver-coated NCs than with standard NCs (1.21 vs 1.79; incidence rate ratio=0.68 [95% CI: 0.52–0.89], P=.005). A lower CLABSI rate per 1,000 central-line days for the silver-coated NCs versus the standard NCs was observed with S. aureus (0.11 vs 0.30, P=.02), enterococci (0.10 vs 0.27, P=.03), and Gram-negative organisms (0.28 vs 0.63, P=.003) but not with coagulase-negative staphylococci (0.31 vs 0.36) or Candida spp. (0.42 vs 0.40).
CONCLUSIONSThe use of silver-coated NCs decreased the CLABSI rate by 32%. CLABSI reduction efforts should include efforts to minimize contamination of NCs.

The antibody responses of 8 cattle experimentally infected with Onchocerca ochengi to 18 recombinant O. volvulus antigens were measured by ELISA. In addition to establishing antigenic cross-reactivity between the species, the dynamics of antigen-specific responses were examined to assess how the recognition of the antigens compared to the known stage-specificity of expression. Six cattle responded to all of the antigens and 2 animals responded to all but 1. The dynamics of the recognition of 4 antigens (B20, MOv-2, MOv-14 and OvNHR2 02E1) were characterized by rapid seroconversion following infection. Antibody levels to 2 antigens (Ov7 and OvALT-1) increased gradually over the course of infection. Antibody levels to 4 antigens (OvTPX-2, OvL3Chitinase, Ov103 and Ov9m) reached maximum levels coincident with the onset of patency. The levels to 3 antigens (OvProalf C50, OvAldolase, Ov39) varied little over the course of infection. Responses to antigens with functional similarities (OvSOD1, OvSOD2 and OvSOD3 or OvGST1 and OvGST2) showed comparable temporal profiles. This study demonstrates the high degree of immunological cross-reactivity between the antigens of O. volvulus and O. ochengi. The immunogenicity of antigens varied over the course of infection in an antigen-specific manner, which not always reflected developmentally regulated expression of the corresponding gene, possibly owing to cross-reactive epitopes on distinct parasite products.

For the purposes of a high-resolution multi-disciplinary study of the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay Formation, two boreholes were drilled at Swanworth Quarry and one at Metherhills, south Dorset, UK. Together, the cores represent the first complete section through the entire formation close to the type section. We present graphic logs that record the stratigraphy of the cores, and outline the complementary geophysical and analytical data sets (gamma ray, magnetic susceptibility, total organic carbon, carbonate, δ13Corg). Of particular note are the new borehole data from the lowermost part of the formation which does not crop out in the type area. Detailed logs are available for download from the Kimmeridge Drilling Project web-site at http://kimmeridge.earth.ox.ac.uk/. Of further interest is a mid-eudoxus Zone positive shift in the δ13Corg record, a feature that is also registered in Tethyan carbonate successions, suggesting that it is a regional event and may therefore be useful for correlation. The lithostratigraphy of the cores has been precisely correlated with the nearby cliff section, which has also been examined and re-described. Magnetic-susceptibility and spectral gamma-ray measurements were made at a regular spacing through the succession, and facilitate core-to-exposure correlation. The strata of the exposure and core have been subdivided into four main mudrock lithological types: (a) medium-dark–dark-grey marl; (b) medium-dark–dark grey–greenish black shale; (c) dark-grey–olive-black laminated shale; (d) greyish-black–brownish-black mudstone. The sections also contain subordinate amounts of siltstone, limestone and dolostone. Comparison of the type section with the cores reveals slight lithological variation and notable thickness differences between the coeval strata. The proximity of the boreholes and different parts of the type section to the Purbeck–Isle of Wight Disturbance is proposed as a likely control on the thickness changes.

Thermomechanical writing occurs as Joule-heated, cantilevered tips imprint nanometer-scale inden (bits) in a 50-nm-thick polymer (PMMA) film. Thermal data reading incorporates the same cantilevers operated in a mode to detect a temperature change when a tip follows the contour of a previously written bit. Binnig et.al [1] demonstrated single-cantilever writing and rading density at 400 Gbit/in2. A micromachined 32 × 32 cantilever array has been fabricated [2] and has demonstrated parallel read/write operation at 150 Gbi/in in2 [3]. Although much progress has been made to develop a thermomechanical data storage device [4], the fundamental process of thermomechanical storage processes by applying atomic force microscope (AFM)-based force detection during thermal operation. We examined the thermomechanics of polymer indentation with respect to time and temperature of interaction. This work impacts the operation of AFM cantilevens for combined thermal writing and reading and understnding of fundamental polymer mesoscopic transport.

We report the growth of structurally continuous, pinhole-free epitaxial YSi2−xfilms on Si(l1l) substrates as thin as 30Å. This is accomplished by depositing both yttrium andsiicon in the appropriate stoichiometric ratio onto substrates held near room temperature, which is apparently below the activation energy for the nucleation of a reaction between a deposited Y film and a Si substrate. Diffusion of Si atoms from an evaporation source into a thin Y layer occurs below this barrier energy, allowing the layer by layer formation of YSi2−x without the removal of silicon from the substrate, maintaining a relatively low interface free energy between the growing silicide film and the Si(lll) substrate. Samples have been annealed to 500-900°C to improve epitaxy without the creation of pinholes. Use of the template method allows for the growth of thicker films also free of pinholes.
